Blower Motor Resistor - Controlling Your Car's Airflow

The comfort of travelling by car largely depends on a well-functioning ventilation and air conditioning system. A key component of this system, responsible for regulating airflow strength into the cabin, is the blower motor resistor, also known as the heater blower motor resistor. Thanks to this part, you can choose between a gentle breeze or maximum power needed for quick demisting. EuroFrance offers a wide selection of new blower motor resistors - plus used alternatives - for brands including Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Dacia, Audi, Volkswagen and Nissan.

Why buy blower motor resistors at EuroFrance?

  • Parts can be matched by vehicle VIN (body number) for correct fitment.
  • We'll help you find the right part by original part number (OE).
  • 12-month warranty for new blower resistors
  • 30-day warranty for used blower resistors
  • 25+ years of experience
  • Trusted supplier of parts for French car brands.

Symptoms of a Faulty Blower Resistor

A blower control system failure is usually easy to spot, although symptoms may vary depending on the vehicle's design. Most commonly, when the blower resistor burns out, drivers experience one of three situations:

  • The blower only works on the highest setting - this is the most classic symptom. The highest speed typically bypasses the resistor circuit (current flows directly to the motor), while lower speeds are blocked by a damaged resistive path.

  • Complete lack of airflow - if the HVAC blower motor resistor has a broken main circuit or a damaged thermal fuse, the fan may not start at all.

  • Uneven operation or no response to adjustments - in newer cars with automatic climate control (Climatronic), a more advanced blower motor control module (often called a "hedgehog") manages fan speed. Its failure can cause the blower to oscillate or continue running after the engine is switched off, leading to battery drain.

How Does a Blower Resistor Work and Why Does It Fail?

The operating principle is relatively simple. In older manual systems, the fan resistor consists of a set of resistive wires or paths that limit the voltage reaching the blower motor. The greater the resistance, the slower the fan spins.

Why do these components fail? The main enemy is high temperature. Blower resistors heat up significantly during operation, which is why they are mounted in the air duct where passing airflow keeps them cool. If the cabin filter is clogged or the blower motor is seized and offers high mechanical resistance, airflow decreases, temperature rises, and the thermal fuse or resistive paths burn out.

Where Is the Blower Motor Resistor Located?

The exact location varies by model - for example, on a Peugeot 206 or 208 the resistor sits behind the glove box, while on a Citroën Jumper it may be accessed from the engine bay. Typical mounting points include:

  • Behind the passenger glove box
  • In the cowl area (accessible from under the bonnet)
  • Near the pedals

Replacement generally does not require specialist tools, but selecting the correct part is crucial. Bear in mind that different ventilation system suppliers (e.g. Valeo, DENSO, Borsehung) may have been used within the same model range.

How to Choose the Right Blower Motor Resistor

For a successful repair, the replacement part must be fully compatible with the vehicle's electrical system. When choosing a blower motor resistor, do not rely solely on external appearance or the car's model year - manufacturers often used different solutions interchangeably.

The most reliable method is checking the OE part number on the component removed from your car. Also consider whether your vehicle has manual or automatic climate control. Manual systems usually feature traditional step-regulated resistors (settings 1-2-3-4), whereas automatic climate control relies on an electronic blower motor module for smooth, stepless speed regulation. You can also filter our catalogue by whether the part is designed for vehicles with or without air conditioning.

Explore the Blower Resistor Range at EuroFrance

We understand how inconvenient it can be to drive without a functioning blower, especially on hot or rainy days. Our catalogue covers resistors for popular models such as the Peugeot 206, 208, 308 and 3008, Citroën C3, C5, Berlingo and Jumper, Renault and Dacia models, as well as Fiat, Audi, Volkswagen and more. Prices start from $7.83, so there is a solution for every budget.

We primarily stock new components from manufacturers like Valeo, DENSO and Borsehung, and also carry thoroughly inspected used parts as an affordable alternative. Every product is described in detail. If you are unsure which resistor fits your vehicle, get in touch - we can match the right part by VIN or OE number so you can enjoy a perfectly climate-controlled cabin again.
