Common warning signs depend on the filter type. A clogged fuel filter causes difficult cold starts, engine hesitation, power loss at higher revs and sometimes a fuel odour in the cabin. A blocked air filter may produce a whistling sound on acceleration and lead to higher fuel consumption. An exhausted oil filter forces more frequent oil changes and can cause premature engine wear.
