Air Filters
For your car's engine to run at peak efficiency, it needs more than quality fuel - it needs clean air. Oxygen plays a vital role in combustion, and its purity directly affects engine condition and longevity. One small but essential component handles that job: the air filter. At EuroFrance we stock a wide range of new air filters for popular brands such as Renault, Peugeot, Citroën and Volkswagen, with prices starting from just £2.76.

What is an air filter and how does it work?
The main task of an engine air filter is to thoroughly clean the air drawn into the combustion chamber. Think of it as the lungs of your vehicle. Every filter is designed to block dust, sand, pollen, insects and other contaminants before they can reach the engine internals.
How does the process work? Housed in a sealed unit within the intake system, the filter element is made from a special porous material. As air passes through, particles larger than the micropores are trapped on its surface, so only clean air reaches the engine. Modern automotive air filters can capture close to 100% of harmful particles, protecting sensitive parts such as cylinders, pistons and turbochargers.
When should you replace the air filter and what are the signs of wear?
An air filter is a consumable part that becomes clogged over time. Built-up contaminants restrict airflow, which can lead to serious performance issues. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every 15,000-20,000 kilometres - or at least once a year, ideally during your annual oil service. If you frequently drive on unpaved roads, in dusty conditions, or with a spirited driving style, consider shortening that interval.
A worn car air filter typically shows these symptoms:
- Reduced engine power: Restricted air supply disrupts the fuel-air mixture, causing noticeable performance loss.
- Increased fuel consumption: The engine compensates for the oxygen shortfall by burning more fuel.
- Starting difficulties: Poor airflow can make cold starts harder.
- Darker exhaust smoke: A sign of incomplete combustion caused by insufficient air.
Can you replace the air filter yourself?
On most models - including popular French cars like the Peugeot 206, 207 or Citroën C3 and Renault vehicles - swapping the air filter is straightforward and requires no specialist tools. The filter housing is usually easy to access in the engine bay.
To replace it yourself:
- Make sure the engine is cool.
- Locate the black plastic filter housing in the engine compartment.
- Open it by unclipping the metal clamps or removing a few screws.
- Take out the old element and wipe the inside of the housing clean.
- Insert the new filter, making sure it sits correctly.
- Close and secure the housing.
Regular inspection and timely replacement is one of the cheapest and simplest ways to look after your engine.
