What Does the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Do?
The primary function of an EGR valve is to redirect a portion of exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber, reducing the oxygen content in the intake charge. This lowers combustion temperatures and slows the process, which in turn cuts nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The system is especially important in diesel engines - the majority of EGR valves in our catalogue are designed for diesel-powered vehicles such as the Renault Megane, Peugeot 206 and 207, or Citroen Berlingo.
Why Do EGR Valves Fail?
A common misconception is that the recirculation valve is simply a fragile component. In reality, most failures stem from a build-up of soot, carbon deposits and particulate residues inside the engine. This accumulation is accelerated when the vehicle is driven mainly on short urban trips or filled with low-quality fuel. Incomplete combustion further worsens the problem, leaving the valve clogged and unable to open or close correctly.
Replacement or Cleaning - Which Is Better?
If the valve is not yet physically damaged - for instance cracked or seized - a thorough clean can restore proper operation. Periodic cleaning is worthwhile for drivers who cover mostly city miles. However, once the damage is more severe, a full replacement is the safest option. Bear in mind that blanking or removing the EGR valve in modern engines is not permitted, as it can disrupt engine management and affect the fuel mixture composition.
